Here's where existing data products are great, where they fall short for Western-Canada data center vendors, and where BLACKSTART beats them. We won't bash a competitor — they're real products built by real people. We'll just be specific about who each is for.

Bloomberg's energy intelligence is industry-leading at the global energy market level — LCOE forecasts, technology cost curves, policy analysis. Used by every major utility, IB, and consultancy. Pricing starts around $30k USD/year per seat.
Platts is the global energy benchmark. 451 Research (now part of S&P) does world-class colocation + data-center market research. Their reports are deeply researched, heavily caveated, and quarterly. Subscription is typically $25k+ USD per dataset.
Enverus owns Alberta oil & gas data — AER permits, well activity, operator profiles. They've started covering power and energy transition. Strong daily refresh, robust API, used by every major AB E&P. Pricing varies, typically $10k+ USD/year per seat.
DCD is the dominant data-center trade publication. Their Tracker product covers thousands of DCs globally — colocation focus, wholesale leasing data, industry news. Pricing typically $8-15k USD/year. Their RSS feeds are excellent (we ingest them).
Dodge tracks every commercial construction project in North America at the planning stage. Used heavily by GCs and bidders for office, healthcare, retail. ~$10k+ USD/year. Generic across all building types.
Every BLACKSTART data source is public. AESO publishes the Long-term Adequacy report. AUC publishes Current Applications. AB MPI is online. County permit notices are crawlable. If your time is worth $0 and you have a dedicated analyst, you can replicate the data layer.
Outrider is BLACKSTART's sister product for the Alberta oil & gas vertical — tracks gas plants and compressor stations from AER licence data. Different vertical, different ICP (rotating-equipment shops, EPC contractors in O&G).
Honesty matters more than marketing. BLACKSTART is not the right tool if:
Demo is real data, refreshed daily, no signup. API is public read-only JSON. Compare BLACKSTART side-by-side with whatever you're using today. If we're not the right tool for you, we'll tell you who is.
